Importance of Front Office Department
• The front office is one of the two major
departments which produces revenue in a
hotel, the other being food and beverage.
• The front office generates nearly 60–70% of
the revenue for the hotel and is responsible
for achieving a high occupancy of the hotel.
• One of the major functions of the front
office is selling accommodation.
• The front office co-ordinates as a link
between the hotel and the guest and at
times is the only area which comes in
contact with a guest and the guest knows
the hotel by the front desk only.
• The front office is like a dispensing post to
handle complaints and suggestions of the
guest.
• Front office is indeed the nerve centre, the
hub and the heart of the hotel.
• Front office co-ordinates with other
departments of hotel in order to provide
more efficient service to the guest by
communicating with every other department with
instructions and directions for
services, care and relations with guests,
• Front office monitors the guest cycle and
co-ordinates all guest services such as
information, mail and message handling,
guest accounting and bill settlement,
telephone, telex and other communication
services.
• Safety and security of guests and his
belongings are also function of the front
office.
• Front office maintains relations with travel
agents, tour operators, airlines and other
hotels.
• Front office has a complementary role of
image-building, which is the first and last
point of contact of every guest.
