Classification of Hotel

 Classification :-


1. Size : - 

Hotels are grouped into the following types on the basis of number of guest rooms .

Small Hotels with 25 rooms or less are classified as small hotels.

Medium Hotels with 26 to 100 rooms are in medium hotels.

Large Hotels with up to 300 guest rooms but not less than 100 rooms.

Very large with more than 300 rooms or less than 1000 rooms.

Mega Hotel with up to 1000 rooms.


2. Location :- 

Hotels may be situated in the city center, suburban areas, near airports, at hill station on beaches. They are classified into the following types on the basis of location.

Downtown Hotel is one which is located in the centre of the city or within a short distance from the business centre, shopping areas, theatres etc.

Suburban Hotel are set in suburban areas & offer the advantage of quieter surroundings, although they provide the same type of service as downtown hotels.

Resort Hotel at located as tourist hot-spot such as hill station, sea beaches, countryside are referred to as resort hotels.

Airport Hotel situated in the vicinity of airports or other ports of entry to a city .

Motel Hotel are located on highways and provide modest service to highway travellers. An added advantage is secure parking facilities for the travellers.

Floating Hotels/ floatels these are parties that float on large water bodies such as rivers, lakes & even sea. The houseboats in Kashmir and boats of Kerala are the example of floatels.


3. Ownership :- 

On the basis of ownership hotels can be of the following types :-

Company / proprietary Ownership :- These includes hotels or lodging properties that are under the direct ownership of a person or a company. A group of hotels that are managed by one company is called a Chain.

Franchise :- The global hospitality industry consist of many large hotel chains that operate on a franchise basis. The franchiser allow the franchisee to use the company idea, method, trademarks & as well as brand mark.

Sole Proprietorship :- These hotels are similar to proprietary ownership but these type of hotels have a single owner instead of multiple owner sharing the hotel.

Partnership is on arrangement in which two a more individuals shares the profits & liabilities of a business venture. All partners might share liabilities and profits equally.



4. Star category – 

The Star rating system indicates the number and standard of facilities offered by a hotel. A brief description of the various categories are given as below:- 

One Star Hotels :- These are generally small and independently owned with a family atmosphere. There may be a limited range of facilities & the meals may be fairly simple. Some rooms may not have an attach bathrooms but the maintenance, comfort and cleanliness level would be acceptable standard.

Two Star Hotels :- These are typically small & medium-sized & offer more expensive service than one star hotel. The rooms are generally well equipped with attached bathrooms. Reception and other hotel staff aim for a more professional presentation and offer a wide range of service like food & beverage.

Three Star Hotel :- These are generally of the size to support higher staffing levels and their range of service is significantly higher than at the lower star classification. The reception and other public areas are spacious. All rooms would have an suite shower offer a good standard of comfort and equipment such as direct dial phone, toiletries. Besides room service, they could offer some additional facilities for business travellers.

Four Star Hotel :- These are the fair mix of luxury and decor at hotels in this category. Bedrooms are also usually more spacious than the lower star rated hotels. There is a high staff to guest ratio, with provision of porter service, 24 hour room service, laundry and dry cleaning services.

Five Star Hotel :- It offers spacious and luxurious accommodation throughout the property, matching the best international standards. The design should impress with its quality and attention to detail, comfort and elegance. The furnishing should be immaculate service formal, well supervised and flawless in its attention to the need of the guest without being instructive. The restaurant should exhibit a high level of technical skill. The staff should be knowledgeable, helpful, and well versed in all aspects of customer care combining efficiency with courtesy.

Five Star Deluxe Hotel :- This is a qualitative extension of the five star category. While quantitatively, the basic features are similar to a five star category, in a five star deluxe hotel, the comparative all round standard of service and amenities is of a very superior quality.
