Introduction -
Hospitality refers to the relationship between a guest and a host, and it also refers to the act or practices of being hospitality. The hospitality industry is an umbrella term for a broad variety of service industries, including hotels, restaurants, casinos, catering enterprise, resort and Clubs. The industry is very diverse & global greatly impacted by fluctuations within the economy as also by various happenings across the world.
Origin and Growth –
The origin & development of the hospitality industry direct outcome of travel & tourism. There are many reasons for a person may travel; Business, Studies, Medical Treatment, Pilgrimage or any other reasons. When a person travel for a few or more days, he may carry his clothes with him, but it is not possible to him to carry his food and home.
Three basic needs food - shelter - cloth are not taken care of when he is travelling. This is where hospitality industry steps in. Before this invented, people journey on animals such as camel, horse & elephant. In those days, they were travel in a group is called caravans. There was a limit for distance to cover in a day. For the night rest, they looked for a place that could provide them with water, fuel to cook food and security from wild animals. The normal lodging houses essentially to cater to these needs of the travelers.
The place are known as Dharamshala and Sarai in India, Ryokans in Japan , Paradors in Spain, Coffee houses in America, Relay house in China. They provide the travelers to some food, wine for drink, beed and sleep on the floor. They made a living by providing accommodations to traveler.
They were devoid of the frills & facilities as seen in the modern -day hospitality establishment. The travelers had to make their own bed and cook for themselves.
Gradually, the inns started providing bed to travelers - typically, an inn would have a large hall with many beds.
